Hjertoos House
In 1907 Andrew and Bergette Hjertoos has this house built by Oscar Hanson
using lumber from nearby Preston Mill. The young couple raised five children
in this home, where they lived as hops and dairy farmers until their deaths
in the 1930s. Over the years, portions of the original farm were sold, and
significant acreage was donated to provide land for local schools, parks and
charitable organizations. The house and barn site was designated a King
County Historic Landmark in 1986, and it recently has been nominated to the
National Register of Historic Places. Both buildings have been restored to
near-original condition by Andrew and Bergette's great-grandson, Roger
Thorson, who lives there now as owner/operator of Carnation Tree Farm.

The Alki
The first steamboat the "Nellie" came up the Snoqualmie River in 1875 or
1876 from Snohomish adn shortly thereafter the Alki, Erwin, Eagle, Fanny
Lake, Maine, Cascade & The May Queen. They all brought provisions & logging
equipment but could only travel when the water was high. The boats had
trouble getting over the ripples. In such cases the boats would run a line
out to a tree & with a winch wind their way over the shallow swift waters.
This picture was acquired from Robert Entwistle, grandson of the late James
Entwistle the first white settler here in Tolt/Carnation.

Background 2003 Fire on hill East of City.
Looking back the town of Tolf/Carnation meant business when it came to
fire protection. Location of fire hydrants & first purchase of 400 ft. of
rubber-lined cotton hose at 18 cents a foot for a grand total of $74.70 was
made Sept 1913. 400 more feet of hose, 6 helmets and a used hose cart from
Gorham Fire Apparatus Co. of Seattle for $315 were purchased later that
year. The hose cart was refurbished and stands proudly on display at King
County District #10 Fire Station here in Carnation.
In 1946 Fire protection was taken up with genuine seriousness and William
(Bill) Larson (standing next to the front wheel of truck) was elected the
first Fire Chief of the Tolt Volunteer Fire Dept. To his left: Art Rinnell,
Art Brumbaugh, Bill Munson and unknown. On the truck Marvin La Brie, Merle
Simpson, Clare Austin, Frank Savinsky. Behind the truck: Dick Wasmund, Wally
